Teaching

My current teaching in Political Science and German and European Studies at York University includes:
  • Comparative Politics PhD Core Seminar
  • Nationalism, Authority and Resistance: Perspectives on German Culture and Society (foundations seminar)
  • Protest Movements and Democracy (fourth year seminar)
  • The Politics of Memory (graduate seminar)
  • Comparative European Politics (third year seminar)
  • Graduate Colloquium in German and European Studies
In summer 2017, I led a DAAD study trip on "Migration and Memory" for 12 wonderful graduate students of DAAD Centers for German and European Studies from around the world (with Dr. Lars Breuer). A few impressions of this trip can be seen on the right.

My teaching interests encompass comparative politics and international relations, as well as research methodology and professional development. More specifically, I enjoy teaching classes on European (Union) politics, international affairs, democratization, social movements, civil society, memory & political culture, and qualitative methods. I believe it is crucial to continuously improve my teaching skills through training and I hold a Teaching Certificate from the University of Maryland's Center for Teaching Excellence. I have previously taught the following courses:
  • Introduction to Research Methods for International Relations
  • World Politics
  • Internships in International Affairs
  • Politics of the European Union
  • Politics and the Media

In addition, I have taken part in numerous fora on teaching and learning, both at my universities and at conferences. I have presented and published on ‘Developing Global Citizenship: Introducing a Teaching Toolkit’ The Political Science Educator, Vol.11 No.2, December 2006 (with Henrike Lehnguth).
